.: HEPTATONIC SCALES :.

:: Heptatonic Scales

The ancient greeks adjudged a personality to each of the then existing keys. To a trained ear, each key was clearly distinct, and could be recognized by their different intervals. After the baroque, survived only two keys: the Ionian (major key) and Aeolian (minor key). These two modes are easily distinguishable, and their personalities are popularly recognized as happy and sad, respectively.

However, due to the type of tuning called equal temperament, it is impossible for an average listener recognize in which scale is written a music piece. Formerly, when using other tuning systems, such as Kimberger, pythagorean tuning and others, for keeping very specific relationships between each sound pitch, they could be responsible for different personalities of the scales, so an average listener could differentiate it. These differences, based on a type of tuning, allowed to set different personalities for the scales, from a subjective point of view, but shared by most people. From the Romanticism to the end of the nineteenth century, when it was already set the equal temperament, which leaves equal all the scales, it was widely used a convention, impossible to prove in practice, imposing a certain personality to each of the twelve scales.
